The LA Galaxy and Chapman University Student-Athlete Advisory Committee join forces on Sunday, December 9 in support of the Andrew McDonough B+ Foundation. All are invited out to the Musco Lawn from 12:30-4 p.m. for the 5v5 soccer tournament with plenty more planned beyond the tournament.
Along with the soccer tournament, the event will feature appearances from the LA Galaxy Star Squad and B+ heroes. There will be giveaways, a DJ, food trucks and a raffle all in support of the B+ Foundation, benefitting the families and children battling pediatric cancer.
For Chapman senior soccer student-athlete Nick Rooney, the event is a culmination of months of planning. His involvement with SAAC and the B+ Foundation made the connection between the two organizations an easy one. He quickly came up with the idea for a 5v5 soccer tournament at Chapman.
As the idea grew, he decided to reach out to the LA Galaxy to see if the MLS soccer club would want to contribute.
"People are receptive if you have the confidence to reach out and knock on the door," Rooney said about his initial contact with the Galaxy. "So, I went out and asked and was put in touch with (Celeste Soto). She was awesome. She was super helpful and responsive."
With Soto on board, the LA Galaxy have become a big part of the event. The Star Squad will be making an appearance with giveaways for those in attendance. The Clinic Coaching Staff will be on-hand for a 30-minute warmup and then will be the officials of the games. The Galaxy are bringing four pop-up goals, prizes for the championship team and player-signed "Kick Childhood Cancer" t-shirts to raffle off as well as goodie bags for the B+ Heroes in attendance.
The tournament will take place from 1-4pm on the Musco Lawn with fraternity and sorority brackets.
The event is the beginning of what Rooney and SAAC President Lauren Friend hope is a long and productive relationship between SAAC and the B+ Foundation.
For now, the focus remains on Sunday's event. A chance to raise awareness and money for B+. If you are interested in signing up a team, the cost is $5 per player with a maximum of seven players on a team. Contact Nick Rooney at 509-887-9777 to sign up.
"The ultimate goal is to raise as much awareness as possible for our B+ Heroes," Rooney added. "We wanted to get a stronger bond between SAAC and B+ and hopefully add more into it as the year progresses. Any money we can raise in addition to that is huge for the kids."
