CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Chapman University men's and women's tennis teams headed out to Claremont to compete in the ITA Division III West Regional this past weekend. Sophomore Lee Sadler led the men's side, earning a spot in the round of 32. Freshman Madison Ross led the women's side, going 3-2 on the weekend and advancing to the round of 16.

Sadler won his first match, taking out Redlands' Thomas Hanley 6-1, 5-7, 6-2. The sophomore dropped his second match 6-0, 6-2 to UC Santa Cruz's Chad le Duff in the round of 32.

The rest of the men's side, which included senior Rasmus Helms, sophomore Len Kamemoto, and freshman Terry Kang, went 0-2 on the tournament. The freshmen duo of Kang and Brandon Sulzberg also went 0-2 in the open doubles round, losing to Cal Lutheran in the first round and Redlands in the consolation round.

Kamemoto and junior Mathew Mead put up a fight against Whittier in the first round of the men's open doubles competition, but dropped the match 8-4.

The women's side saw a little more success, as Ross posted a winning record. The rookie beat Annette Sousa of Cal Lutheran and Yurie Heard of Pomona-Pitzer on her way to the round of 16. She was finally handed a 6-2, 6-1 loss courtesy of CMS's Catherine Allen. Ross continued on to the consolation round, where she advanced to the second round on a withdraw. She dropped the next match 5-7, 6-4, 10-2 to Pomona-Pitzer's Olivia Mendoza.

Freshmen Isabella Oedekirk and Vasilisa Trofimova each went 2-2 on the day, advancing to the round of 32 in both the open and consolation rounds.

Rookie Anna Kaplan dropped a pair of games in the singles competition, but found more luck when she paired up with junior Nicole Fouts for the doubles round. The pair went 1-2, beating Ankita Roychoudhury and Angelica Zhou of Caltech in the open round, followed by an 8-1 loss to Allen and Rebecca Berger of CMS.

Oedekirk and Ross had the same fate, beating Samantha Farrell and Weera Wright of Occidental in the first round of open doubles but losing in the second round to a pair from CMS.

This marks the end of the Panthers' fall season. They return to play in the spring on Tuesday, Feb. 20 as they host Bates College.
