In seven amazing seasons, Tereschuk has secured his place in the storied history of Chapman baseball. In that short time he has already climbed into second place on the Panthers' all-time wins list at 251-79. He will enter the 2010 season just seven victories shy of tying Chapman's all-time record for head coaching wins and his .761 winning percentage is among the best in all of Division III.
Tereschuk came storming onto the Division III scene in 2003 when, as a rookie head coach, he guided Chapman to its first national championship in 35 years. Since then, Tereschuk's 'pitching and defense' philosophy has gotten the Panthers to the Division III finals in five consecutive seasons (2005-09), giving Chapman six West Region championships in seven years. He has earned West Region Coach of the Year six times, as well as ABCA Division III National Coach of the Year in 2003. He has coached 13 All-Americans and 26 All-West Region players and has seen six of his players drafted by Major League organizations.
Before earning the top spot at Chapman, Tereschuk served as head
coach at nearby Villa Park High School, winning two CIF Southern
Section championships. He was honored as CIF-SS Coach of the Year
in 2000 and 2002, and led the team to the CIF playoffs in all four
of his years. Tereschuk played baseball at Long Beach City College
and attended the University of San Diego on a baseball scholarship
from 1978-82. He received bachelor's degrees in history and
political science from Cal State Long Beach in 1984 and 1987,
respectively. He then earned a master's degree in education from
Whittier College in 1993.
Dave Edwards has built and maintained one of the most dominating collegiate pitching staffs in the country. Chapman is consistently ranked in the top ten for lowest ERA (leading the nation in '03 with a staff ERA of 1.91). In seven years, Coach Edwards has coached ten All-Americans, four West Region Pitchers of the Year, and one National Pitcher of the Year. His pitchers have led the nation in a statistical category five times: twice for wins, twice for ERA, and once for saves. Seven of his Panther pitchers have signed professional contracts. During the 1980s, "Eddie" pitched in both the Detroit Tigers and Oakland A's organizations.
Mark Clabough is responsible for all aspects of Chapman's defense. He also serves as the Panthers' third base coach and will coach baserunning among many other things. Coach Clabough has several years of coaching experience in the Southern California area. For the past ten years, Mark has been the head coach at Los Alamitos HS where he won several championships in the powerful Sunset League; he also continues to be a full-time English teacher at the school. Prior to Los Al, Mark was a teacher and the baseball coach at Long Beach Wilson HS where he led the Bruins to back-to-back CIF Finals appearances.
Andy Yonaki enters his first year at Chapman after spending the last nine years as an assistant coach for Mark Clabough at Los Alamitos High School. During his time at Los Al, Andy served as the hitting and infield coach, and many of his players have gone on to play baseball at the collegiate level including current Panthers Ryan Prechtl, Joe Lehman, Eric Robbins, and Logan Flagg. Coach Yonaki received his B.A. in mathematics from Cal State Long Beach and recently earned his M.A. in Education from National University. Andy currently teaches geometry at Buena Vista High School in Paramount.
Dustin Bothwell prepped at Capistrano Valley High School and then continued his collegiate career at Saddleback College where he was a member of the 2004 state championship team. Dustin worked as an assistant coach at the College of the Redwoods for the past two seasons while also earning his B.A. degree from Humboldt State University. During the summer months Dustin continues to coach in Oregon where he is the pitching coach for the Eugene Challengers. Currently, Dustin is in the process of completing his M.A. at Azusa Pacific University. Dustin and his wife, Sunny, have one son, Drake, and live in Laguna Niguel.
Joe Gonzalez is in his first season as a Panther and will assist the Chapman squad in many different ways. Joe's playing career includes two Century League Championships and a CIF Championship at Villa Park High School where he played under Tereschuk and Edwards. After graduating in 2000, Joe continued to play ball at nearby Fullerton College. He is now working towards his teaching credential and looking forward to his future career as a teacher and baseball coach.
