Modern day Chapman legends to be enshrined on Saturday

ORANGE, Calif. - Chapman University and the Donald P. Kennedy Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will host its annual Athletics Hall of Fame ceremony and banquet on Saturday. It will be the youngest cast of inductees in school history as all three honorees graduated from Chapman in the 1990s. The banquet will begin with a reception at 4 p.m. and precede Chapman's home football game against Cal Lutheran University at 7 p.m. at Wilson Field. The inductees include a pair of national champions and a two-time Academic All-America selection: Matt Barcellona '99 (baseball), Jessamine Maiben '98 (softball) and David Seline '90 (tennis).
Matt Barcellona '99: As team captain with a 3.9 GPA in biology and chemistry, Barcellona earned Academic All-America honors in 1998 and '99 and was named Chapman's Male Student Athlete of the Year in '99. He is Chapman's first Division III baseball player to be inducted, helping the Panthers to the NCAA baseball playoffs three times and a West Region title in 1997. He earned the university's most prestigious Cheverton Trophy- awarded to Chapman's top graduating senior. For his career, he still ranks in Chapman's top-10 in runs, stolen bases and assists. And in 1999, he led all of Division III as the "Toughest to Strikeout" with just two strikeouts in 135 at-bats. Barcellona is currently a pediatrician with North Scottsdale Pediatric Associates.
Jessamine Maiben '98: Maiben helped Chapman win the Division III national championship as a freshman in 1995. In four years, she led the Panthers to the national championship game three times, earned All-America honors thrice, and was named All-West Region all four years. She is still Chapman's all-time leader with 258 hits and ranks in the top-5 in school history in over 16 statistical categories. She finished her career with a .427 batting average, 19 home runs and 40 stolen bases. You can also find Maiben's name scattered throughout the NCAA record book as her 30-game hitting streak in 1997 and 80 base hits in 1996 still rank among the best in Division III history, among her many feats.
David Seline '90: As a freshman in 1987, Seline became an integral piece of the Chapman's tennis dynasty in the 80s immediately upon arrival. That year, the Panthers won their second NCAA Division II national championship in three years and Seline was named to the All-America team along with doubles partner Paul Charlesworth. The following year, Chapman made it back-to-back NCAA championships and three in four years. David earned All-America honors three times in his career. In 1990 he earned the J.A. Stivers Award for Outstanding Athletic and Academic Achievement. David has spent the last 10 years working as a USPTA certified tennis professional at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego.
The newest members and all current Hall of Fame members in attendance will be recognized on the field during halftime of the football game. Their names will also be displayed on Chapman's Hall of Fame wall on campus as part of Gray Victory Way in the Lastinger Athletics Complex. Tickets for the banquet are available for $60 per person or $600 per table. For more information, contact Hilda Douvas: 714-744-2191 or douvas@chapman.edu.
